About the drawings

Here you will find a catalogue of current drawings by Steve, each with a description of the inspiration behind each piece. Some drawings are based on funfairs taking place across the UK in different years, and some are funfairs created through the imagination of the artist who is incredibly passionate about travelling funfairs and the showmen who present them.

FUNFAIR 1 (BEACONSFIELD 1992)

Beaconsfield 1992: This one-day street fair in Buckinghamshire is one of the busiest travelling Fun Fair's in the UK. The streets around the town centre closed off to traffic for just one day. The Fair brings extra visitors for just one day each year. This annual charter fair is traditionally held on 10 May and has been held every year since 1269 celebrating its 750th year in 2019.

FUNFAIR 2 (GRANTHAM MID LENT 2007)

Grantham Mid Lent Fair 2007. On the town centre streets, this Fun Fair is the only Fair that builds up on a Saturday night, into the early hours of Sunday morning, A Royal Charter for the fairs was granted in 1484 under the reign of King Richard III. Most of the showmen who arrive here, travel from Stamford just up the road, who's Fun Fair closes the same night prior to the Grantham build up, you can imagine how tired the showmen are, after just a few hours open up for business again by Sunday lunch time.

FUNFAIR 5 (GOOSE FAIR PART 1)

Nottingham Goose Fair 2019 Is arguably the UK’s biggest travelling Fun Fair and one of the biggest in Europe on over 14 acres of ground and around 100 large rides and attractions including roller coasters and giant wheels. Most historians agree the fair probably started just after 1284 when the Charter of King Edward I referred to city fairs in Nottingham. The name probably came from the hundreds of geese which were driven from Lincolnshire to be sold in Nottingham. A fat roast goose was a traditional Michaelmas treat.

FUNFAIR 7 (WINSFORD SALT FAIR 2019)

Winsford Salt Fair 2019: This particular fair is very special to me as I created this Fair/event in Sept 2012, when me and my husband visited the 'Great British library' in London to retrieve Winsfords charter written by King Edward the 1st in 1280 granting Winsford its annual fair that takes place every Wednesday and the following four days closest to the 14th Sept. I names this Winsford Salt Fair, working with lessee Harry Sharland we regularly drew in 10 adiltv rides plus supporting attractions

FUNFAIR 12 - (CHESTER MAY FAIR 2021)

The Harris family present Pat Collins Fun Fair annually in Chester each May and is their most Northern location. Pat Collins was arguably the greatest Showman that ever travelled and the Harris family who present their Fun Fair under this name follow the run of Fairs.Pat Collins, Ltd. was created in 1899, when Collins had established a round of fairs in the Black Country based on traditional holidays or 'Wakes' from August to October. FUNFAIR 13 (LYTHAM ST. ANNE'S CLUB DAY) PRESENTED BY LESSEE STANLEY JOHN CUBBINS 24TH - 28TH JUNE 2021

Some tenants had been out for a couple of months, but for many this was the first Fun Fair for the first time in over a year. As Covid restrictions are lifting, lots of public were out having Fun for the first time, and for me and probably most of the Showmen, it was wonderful to see a busy Fair. I visited on the Sunday after club day the day before. Many machines were riding at full capacity and the side stuff also doing ok. The atmosphere was magic and gave showmen some much needed business. Was nice to see Max Cubbins' Terror Tower's Ghost Train visiting for the first time. The theming was great and the clock showing some great images, adding to the ghostly ride.

FUNFAIR 14 (WINSFORD SUMMER FAIR) PRESENTED BY HARRY SHARLAND 5TH-8TH AUGUST 2021

After almost two years Winsford's Fun Fair returned to town on a site not used for almost 35 years on Wharton Recreation Ground. Hosted by Harry Sharland, there were 5 Adult rides and 11 Children's rides including Harry's own Crazy Fun House. This brought back childhood memories as this is the ground where I first started working on the Fair with a couple called James and Dolly Smith, who had a 36ft set of side joints. I helped them out many a year after this and the Fairground remains with me to this date. Other machines included Nick Hill's - 'Mad Max' Miami, Mason Gore's 'Mexican Wave' Jump and Smile, Marshall Hill's -Round Up, Stuart Stanworth's - Waltzer and Sharland’s Fun Fair's Twister

FUNFAIR 15  - KINGSTON UPON HULL 2019
PRESENTED BY HULL CITY COUNCIL)

*Please note - picture attached is not completed version*

The first drawing I have created of Hull fair since 1995, arguably the biggest travelling Fun Fair in Europe. At least double that size, over 4xA3, this is my biggest drawing to date, taking over three months to complete and ready for Christmas 2021.

Back to the Fair itself: After an absence of a year due to cancellation in 2020 because of a worldwide pandemic, the city council decided to let one of the best attended fairs go ahead. Reports show that it was a very safe event. Rival ,Nottingham Goose Fair, was not allowed to go ahead (due to the city council wanting the event fenced in). This was quite rightly not popular with showmen who thought that this would set a pricey precedence for future fairs, and could have been replicated all over the country, potentially killing many fairs off.

There were well over 100 adult rides and attractions in attendance, many new this year. Including British built 'Void' Orbiter manufactured by Tavoli and debuting by owners the Reeves family who designed its very modern decor. The same family also presented their super speed 'Ice Jet' Matterhorn. Amongst other rides and attractions, there were, for the second time in the fairs history, three Giant Wheels presented by GEA Ltd, Observation wheel UK and Giant Wheel Company. There were also 6 Waltzers, 5 Twists and 7 Dodgem sets. Many fortune tellers, children's rides, shows and refreshments trailers also attended. With every type of food you could think of on Walton Street (There must have been three Greek food stalls this year). And of course the famous Bob Carver with his chips and pate cooked on coal burners.

FUNFAIR 16 (WINSFORD CARNIVAL: WHARTON RECREATION GROUND FUNFAIR - AUGUST 1983)

Wharton Recreation ground Carnival Fun Fair, Winsford, in August 1983, where it all began for me. Supporting showman James Smith and his wife Dolly with a 46ft set of side stalls. I often helped them build these up on Fairgrounds throughout Cheshire. I stood on the can stall, sometimes the darts. The Fair remained on this ground for many years. One of my few coloured Fun Fair's, on this one you will see Joe White's Paratrooper and Meterorite (Round Up) - both novelty rides of the day. And not seen these days, a coconut shy.

FUNFAIR 17 WHARTON RECREATION GROUND CARNIVAL FUN FAIR (AUGUST 1980)

On this Fair drawn all those years ago, you will see Michael Ryan's Speedway. "Any more riders and away we go" often heard from the showmen before we set off, sat on a Speedway, holding on for your life. Very popular in its day. Sadly no longer seen on a travelling Fun Fair.
Also here John Greatorex's Meteorite
(A Welsh showman) - this ride often appeared at the massive Nottingham Goose Fair

FUNFAIR 18 (MENAI BRIDGE STREET FAIR 2021)

Menai Bridge Street 'Charter Fair', held on the 24th October every year, unless it falls on Sunday, like this year. Held Friday 22nd-Saturday 23rd. Until now, Bridge Street and other streets also held a traditional market where locals would flock to, to buy anything from sweets and toys to bedding. Showmen commented how sad to see them no longer. Hoping they may return next year. New this year on 'Waun car park' was Jan De Konnings 'Happy Wheel' where you could ride and see views of the Menai Strait.

FUN FAIR 19 - KINGS LYNN MART 2022 (A3)

This Fair was first recorded in 1204 during the reign of King John. However the Charter marking the Valentine's Day fair was granted by Henry VIII in 1537. The site of the fair is the Tuesday Market Place with the Mayor and Chairman of the Markets Committee accompanied by local dignitaries and officials of the Showmen's Guild performing an opening ceremony proceeded by a blessing on the fair and the showmen who attend.

During the later half of the nineteenth century the King's Lynn Mart was a spectacular event in which Frederick Savage of King's Lynn displayed his latest roundabouts and fairground attractions to the showmen. This display of new machines and amusements continues today with the showmen vying to display the latest amusements on the same spot next to the Globe Hotel.

FUNFAIR 20 - BRIDGWATER ST. MATTHEW'S FAIR 2021 (2XA4)

Bridgwater St Matthew’s Fair dates back to 1249 when King John granted Bridgwater its annual Fair.  Firstly being held in the centre of the town, by 1404 it had grown so large as to be moved to St Matthew’s Field and West Street where it still stands today.  Annually the Fair commences on the last Wednesday in September lasting for four days.  It was a one day fair until 1857 when a local act was passed to make it three days.  In 1919 a fourth day was granted to help the traders, and it has remained as four days ever since. Notable on this drawing are the only two ever built ‘Twin Spin’s’ by the  families: Roberts ( Megaspin) built March 1996 as a seated model and Rogers (Stargate) built December 1995 a standing model , both manufactured in the UK by ARM UK. And strangely no further models ever made

FUNFAIR 30 - SANDBACH WAKES FAIR 2022

The earliest mention of the Sandbach Wakes was in newspapers in 1877. It appears that the local pubs did good business from visitors from the Potteries during Wakes Week. The Wakes Week is a holiday period in parts of England and Scotland. Originally a religious celebration or feast, the tradition of the Wakes Week developed into a secular holiday. Sandbach until recent time was where Foden lorries were built and employees would have participated in Wakes Week. Times have changed and in most cases this celebration has ended, however the Fun Fair still survives in Sandbach where the annual fair is presented by local showman Joe White and Son Joe William White, who this year presented the uk's newest Dodgem track 'Fast Track'

This was a very special Fair to me, not only as the founder of Winsford Salt Fair, but also an event that celebrated the wedding of my marriage to husband Mark who supported me in finding the Charter to this Fair that we worked on together to resurrect this Fair in 2012. I wanted a set of Gallopers for this special occasion, however we got a traditional Big Wheel instead presented by Malcom Taylor, this Fair the biggest to date in Winsford featured Sheldon Harts unique Over the Top amongst the 10 adult rides.
